At Reaching Beyond, we implement student specific programs based on the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA). Each program is designed to meet the child’s specific needs and incorporates numerous ABA principles such as reinforcement, prompting, shaping and chaining. Specific assessments are conducted to determine a child’s strengths, as well as the areas in need of strengthening, which helps develop the child’s program goals. Parent goals are also a fundamental component of a child’s program. We teach skills from a variety of developmental domains such as; receptive and expressive language, self-help skills, play and social skills, and motor skills. Depending on the child’s age and abilities, his/her program may also include teaching academic skills, as well as improving conversational skills, and more complex social skills. Program data are recorded daily and frequently monitored to ensure gains are being achieved.
The reduction of challenging behaviour is also an important goal in a child’s program when applicable. The reasons for challenging behaviour vary from child to child and can at times be very complex. It is important that the reasons for the behaviour first be identified after which strategies can be determined and implemented.
Reaching Beyond utilizes a variety of curriculum assessments and tools to help guide a student’s program. Examples of these assessments include; The Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills (ABLLS-R), Promoting Emergence of Advanced Knowledge: Relational Training System (PEAK), and The Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program (VB-MAPP).
